Chapter 1 : Why I Wrote this Book
Learning Objectives
You’ll learn how to make money online and increase your income from home by starting an
eBay business. The goal of this book is to lead you in the right direction and give you an
actionable step by step manual in order for you to succeed.
I’ve been selling online since 2006 and wanted to find a low cost solution for the people who
want a great low cost education. This book is specifically for those people who hustle
towards lifes challenges.
Do you want to increase your income in your spare time and spend no money upfront? If so,
this book is for you.
How to Use T his Book
Links are your friend. Throughout the book you will find links to videos that will complement
the text. You can watch the video for each chapter before or after reading. It will give a
visual to those individuals who need one for the “how-to” parts in the book.
Introduction
You know the phrase "You need money to make money" well I wanted to prove that wrong.
This book will teach you the actionable steps you can take to make money by spending no
money upfront. You do not need any prior knowledge
Hi, my name is Matt Bernstein and I've been selling online since 2006 and have sold over
$750,000 dollars in total.
This book is a case study about my online retail store. On January 31st 2012 I started
Sports Pulse, LLC and made my first sale 2 weeks later. My sales to date as of 12/01/2013
have been over $525,000.00.
This was achieved with no overhead costs. You don’t risk any of your own money. This
means no loans and no inventory costs to you. If things work for one person it will effectively
work the same for any other person.
The goal of this course is to show how I created Sports Pulse, LLC from $0 to $525,000 in
sales in less than two years’ time.
The mindset you need for the rest of your life is simple. You need to love hard work and to
rely on yourself in order to succeed.
The Timing is NEVER Right
You must throw yourself into the situation and act as if you know what you’re doing. You
need to learn from your experience and correct course along the way in order to succeed..
Having No T ime is NOT an Excuse
There is always enough time if you spend it right. Stop trying to accomplish everything your
mind thinks of. It’s impossible with the thousands of things on your to-do list. You must pick
your battles. Much of your time is wasted on things that will make no difference in the major
scheme of things.
Don’t Quit Your Day Job
Don’t think for a second I want you to quit your day job. You can start working on your
project before work or after work. Instead of killing your mind by watching TV or playing
video games, work on your business. Instead of waking up at 6am, wake up at 5am. I’m not
talking about pulling all-nighters or 16 hour days. I’m talking about squeezing out 7 extra
hours a week. I’m a firm believer in putting in better hours and not more hours. Unless your
business earns you the money you need to survive on a long term basis you should never
quit your job.
The Two Most Important Ways to Learn a New Skill
Getting guidance from someone who has already done what you are trying to do and to
actually do what they suggest.
Beginner’s Mind
Sometimes, having no experience is a huge advantage.
Your age doesn’t matter, but an open mind does.
Your lack of resources can be an advantage forcing you to become more inventive with the
little you have.
Always Do Your Best
When you do your best, you live your life to the fullest. You are going to be productive and
you are going to be better to yourself. When you always do your best, you take action. Do
your best because you love it, not because you’re expecting a reward. Do it because you
want to make a real contribution to the world and truly add value to peoples lives.
Get Ready to Rumble
Are you ready to learn how I sold $199,000 my first year of creating a new business and
$326,000 so far in my 2nd year? You’re going to learn how to execute boosting your income
from home and this book will point you in the right direction. Your first step is to create an
eBay account!

One Last Thing
Chapter 2: Creating an eBay Account
Goals of this Chapter
You’ll learn why you should use eBay to sell online. You’ll learn how to create an eBay
account by watching a how to video. You’ll learn about eBay selling limits and why you need
to be patient in order to succeed selling on eBay and to succeed in life.
eBay is the Worlds Perfect Business
eBay gives you an easy access to a worldwide customer base - who is looking to buy the
products you’re selling. Getting started with eBay is virtually risk free for you. You don’t
need any startup capital and you don’t need to take out a loan. You benefit from massive
amounts of internet traffic. There are safety measures that protect buyers and sellers from
fraud. Your income potential is virtually unlimited and is only limited by. . .your ability to find
items to resell. Your knowledge of creative selling techniques and your time.
eBay Earns Their Commission
You can list a product immediately and make a sale on eBay within 6 hours of listing that
item. If you’re new to selling and marketing then eBay is a great solution. eBay does all the
marketing for you. The best part is, eBay only gets paid when you make a salet! eBay is a
great way to test which items sell and which ones don’t sell.
How to Create an eBay Account Video
First, you’re going to want to create an eBa\ account. Go on your desktop, laptop, or tablet.
Make sure you log into one of those options before continuing. Go to ebay.com and click
register on the top left corner of your screen, where it says “sign in or register” This will
prompt you to the “Get Started with eBay” page and you can proceed to type in your “first
name, last name, email address, and password” By clicking submit you agree to eBay terms
and conditions.
eBay will send you a welcome message and now you’ve created an eBay account. You’re
not done just yet. You still need to learn how to create an eBay selling account. Go to the
top left hand corner of your screen and click on your name. A tab will appear and click on
“account settings” This is where you can access your account information at anytime.
Next you need to click on the sell tab that is located on the top left corner of your screen.
eBay will prompt you to a page where you need to “update your information” You need to
type in your “country, street address, zip code, city, state, and phone number” and click
continue so eBay can update your information.
Next you want to access your eBay “selling manager” this is where you can keep track of
sold, unsold, and active inventory listings you have listed on eBay.
Go to your messages and click on the “eBay welcome message” and click on “account
preferences”. You’ll be prompt to your account information and click on edit to the right of
your “user id” eBay will require you to confirm your password before you can make any
change to your ID.
The final step to creating your eBay selling account is to click my account and then on eBay
store subscriptions. You do not need an eBay store in order to create a selling account.
You’ll notice that eBay says “you do not have an active sellers account” click on that link
and then confirm your personal information. eBay will call you immediately to confirm your
identity. This will prevent fraud. Next type in your credit card information because this is how
you pay your eBay commission fees every month after you sell an item.
eBay Selling Limits - Be Patient
You’ll notice that after you’ve created your selling account that you’re limited to 10 items or
selling $1000 worth of items per month. You’re going to have to be patient. It’s easy to
increase your selling limits. You just need to sell some products your first month and receive
5 star feedback.
After one month you’ll be able to call eBay and explain to them your business plan and they
will increase your selling limits each month by about 75%. eBay will want to know where
you’re getting your products, how many products you want to list, and what the average
sale price is.
You want to be patient because eBay will carry you to make enough sales to boost your
income and will help you build a customer base for your business.
eBay is very selective and they hold their sellers to very high expectations to allow them to
sell on eBay. You need to be on top of your business and make sure you satisfy your
customers. That’s why it’s important you follow the steps in upcoming chapters to avoid
getting banned from eBay.
With that said, it’s very easy to increase your eBay selling limits every month. You just need
to know what to say. You will learn how to increase selling limits later in the book.
Right now you need to learn how to use eBay. If you’re a beginner, there are plenty of
resources you should look for in the eBay knowledge base. eBay does a great job teaching
you how to use their website and you need to ask the right questions and love hard work in
order to be successful. You can access the eBay Knowledge Base by clicking on this link.
Chapter 3: Creating a PayPal Account
Introduction
Now that you’ve created your eBay account and have looked through the eBay Knowledge
Base to gain more confidence using eBay. You’re ready to learn how to create a PayPal
account to accept payments on eBay and begin boosting your income.
Goals of this Chapter
You’ll learn why you should use PayPal. You’ll learn how to create a PayPal account and
how PayPal selling limits work. You need to be patient. Good things happen to people who
have a sense of urgency and are willing to hustle through lifes challenges.
Why PayPal?
You’ll quickly come to know that eBay and PayPal work hand and hand. Especially when
you’re first starting out. PayPal is owned by eBay and eBay requires you to use PayPal to
accept payments when you’re first start to sell. Because of this you’re forced to create a
PayPal account to sell on eBay. So lets get you started!
How to Create a PayPal Account Video
Go to ebay.com and go to my “account settings” Scroll all the way down to “my PayPal” and
click “link my PayPal account” This will take you to the PayPal website and you can click “I
don’t have a PayPal account” Type in the same email address that is associated with your
eBay account and create and confirm your password. You need to review your account
information and then click continue.
Now that you’ve created your PayPal account you need to finish linking your eBay and
PayPal accounts in order to sell on eBay. Go back to eBay “account setting” and click “link
my PayPal account” and now type in your PayPal email and password that you created and
click “link my account”
Now that your eBay and PayPal accounts are linked. Go to PayPal.com and login. PayPal
will prompted a screen that requires you to create two security questions to protect your
account. Any time you’re dealing with a financial account you want it to be secure as
possible.
After you sign up for PayPal you should look through the knowledge base found here.
PayPal Knowledge Base . You’re going to need to link your credit card, bank account, and
social security number with your PayPal account. This is to prevent fraud and confirm your
true identity.
You’re going to have to rely on your abilities to adapt and learn new things. Throughout this
book you’re going to be introduced to websites and tools you’re not familiar with. Most
websites have knowledge bases and videos that will teach you to how to use their websites
properly. Your ability to learn these new skills will determine your success.
PayPal Selling Limits - Be Patient
Once you sign up for a PayPal account and make your first sale, you’ll notice that eBay
holds the sale transaction money into your PayPal account for up to 21 days. This is to
prevent fraudulent transactions. eBay has standards that you need to live up to in order for
you to sell on eBay long term. You need to be patient because eventually they will not have
that 21 day limit placed on you. This is only for new sellers to prevent fraud. When you
upload your tracking number for each order, PayPal will release the funds 2-3 business
days after your customers order has been received.
PayPal Merchant Fees
To start, PayPal charges 2.9% merchant service fee on every transaction. Once you start
selling more, that will be automatically be lowered to 2.5% or 2.2% depending on your
volume of sales. You will get to that point eventually, you just have to be patient throughout
the process. This is easy to accomplish, you just need time. Like Frank Sinatra said if you
can do it here, you can do it anywhere. Meaning if I can do it, you can do it.
Chapter 4: Thinking of Retail Products to Sell
Introduction
You’ve created an eBay and PayPal account and now you need to figure out for yourself
what products you want to sell. The goal of this lecture is for you to brainstorm a list of ideas
of retail products to sell. Just throw yourself in, act as if, and adjust course along the way.
Goals of this Chapter
You’ll learn how to figure out what retail product to sell on eBay. You’ll learn what qualifies
as a good retail product to sell on eBay and you’ll learn why you should sell products
between a $250-$3000 price point.
Retail Products to Sell
The most important thing to know is that you should sell products that you use and are
passionate about. These are products that you are excited to tell your friends about.
To-Do List
You should write down a list of items that you are passionate about using. Select things that
you enjoy or that you believe in.
Brainstorm Items to Sell
Write down your interests and hobbies.
Write down what you like to do in your spare time.
What are your areas of expertise associated with your profession?
Create a list based off these ideas.
Qualifications of Good Retail Products to Sell
Items that are not sold in retail stores because there is less competition and more profit
margin for you.
You should avoid electronics because there are too many sellers undercutting each others
prices and there isn’t a lot of profit margin left for you.
You should focus on a niche market because you don’t want to be selling guitars AND
gardening supplies in the same store. You want to focus on one industry, for example music
instruments. Maybe you want to focus on just guitars, and maybe focus to one brand of
guitars. The more focused you are the more devoted customers will seek your business for
products they want to buy.
You should focus on items priced between $250-$3000 because it takes as much time to
list an item that sells for $20 as it does to list an item that sells for $250 - which would you
rather list?
Why the $250-$3000 Price Point is Very Important
This is a very important concept because in retail, you make around 7.5%-12.5% in profit on
every sale.
For a product that sells for $20 you’d make around $2 profit.
For a product that sells for $250 you’d make around $25 profit.
If you sold products for $20, you’d have to make 1 2-1 3 times as many sales to equal selling
an item priced at $250.
12 more sales means you’d be more stressed trying to fulfill all those orders. It means more
tracking numbers you have to upload to your website. It means more transactions you’d
need to keep track of for accounting. It’s extra work for you and isn’t worth all the stress.
This is a lifestyle business and the less work you have the less mistakes are made and the
happier you are. The goal is to make the most money possible with every sale.
Chapter 5: Validating Your Retail Product Ideas
Introduction
Matt Bernstein here to talk about how to use eBay to validate your list of items you are
thinking about selling. The goal is to validate your ideas and to find out whether you will be
successful selling these products on eBay and on the internet.
Goals
You’ll learn how to Validate Retail Product to Sell
You’ll see Good Examples of Products to Sell
How to Validate Retail Products to Sell Video
You can look through all the eBay categories and search the completed listings to see what
products sold and what products did not sell on eBay in the last 90 days. We’re going to
look at eBay completed listings to figure out whether your ideas are worth pursuing and
worth trying to sell online.
Go to www.ebay.com and click on advanced search.
You want to click on the category of the product you want to research. Using the eBay field
“In this category:”
In the “search including” field, you want to click sold listings. This will show you complete list
of items that sold in the category you chose on eBay in the last 90 days.
In the “price” eBay field you want to make sure it’s over $250 because you want to spend
your time selling products that will make you over $25 in profit with every sale.
In the “buying format” eBay field you want to click buy it now because you want to avoid
listing your products in the auction format. When you place your listings as an auction you
run the risk of losing money. You want to minimize as much risk as possible. When you list
your products as a “Buy it Now” you chose the price and you’re in control.
In the “condition” eBay field, you want to make sure it’s a “New” product. All the products
we’re going to be selling will come directly from the manufacturer and will always be factory
sealed and brand new
Scroll down the page and click search. Your advanced criteria has been met only after you
fill in these fields on eBay. Make sure to watch the video that complements the blog post to
figure out how to do it yourself.
Examples
For the first example, we are going to look at the “Musical Instruments” category on eBay.
The reason why we are doing this is to see what eBay category products are worth selling.
You need to check every category and see what products sell the best.
Musical Instruments
You’ll see that 42,000 items priced above $250 sold on eBay in the last 90 days and
138.000 items did not sell. That’s OK because you’re never going to sell everything in your
inventory.
You need to recognize what 20% of your products will make up for 80% of your profits.
42.000 items sold out of the 180,000 items in total that were listed. Meaning 23% of items
listed on eBay that fit this criteria sold in the last 90 days.
There is no reason why you can’t get a piece of that market. You’re going to match the best
price, you’re going to have better customer service, better return policies, and better
shipping policies. Those are the MOST important factors if you want to be BETTER than
your competitors.
Toys & Gaming
25,000 NEW items SOLD on eBay PRICED over $250 in the last 90 DAYS with 80,000
completed listings in total - meaning 55,000 items did not sell.
OVER 30% of products listed on eBay under Toys & Gaming SOLD in the last 90 days. If
you make at least $25 profit per sale you need ONLY 800 SALES PER YEAR to PROFIT
$ 20 , 000 .
Lets do more math - if you only need 800 sales per year - that means you need about 200
sales per 90 days. 25,000 items in total sold on eBay in the last 90 days. You’re telling me
you can’t sell 200 of those?
Match the best price, have better return policies, better shipping policies, and have the
BEST customer service and you’ll be able to sell 200 products in 90 days.
Chapter 6: Getting a Tax ID to Work With Wholesalers
Introduction
Great news! Now you’ve figured out what products to sell and congratulations because that
is a very hard step to complete. You should be proud. You’ve created an eBay account and
learned more about how eBay works. You’ve created a PayPal account and learned more
about how payment gateways work. You’ve decided on selling a product you’re passionate
about using. You’re building momentum and hopefully you have a sense of urgency to get
things done. Now we’re here to talk about creating an EIN or Employer Identification
Number.
Goals of this Chapter
You will learn what an EIN is, why you need an EIN, and you’ll learn how to get an EIN.
Hope you’re excited! You’re going to be one step closer to increasing your income from
home. Smile.
What an EIN is
Applicable to the United States, an Employer Identification Number or EIN is the corporate
equivalent to a Social Security Number, although it is issued to anyone, including
individuals. The purpose of an EIN is so that the IRS will be able to identify your business
for taxes.
Why You Need an EIN
You need it to work with wholesalers. You need it to be able to buy products for resale.
Without an EIN you will not have access to legitimate wholesalers. It is required to go into
the retail business. With an EIN you won’t have to pay sales tax on products you buy for
your business, including items for resell.
HOW TO GET AN EIN VIDEO
Now that you know what an EIN is and why you need it. We can jump into showing you how
easy and free it is to get one. Go to irs.gov and go to the “tools” category on the website
and click “apply for an employer identification number” Scroll all the way to the bottom of the
page and click “apply online now” You should read all the information on the website before
proceeding.
The IRS wants to know what kind of legal structure your business will be. You’re choosing a
sole proprietor because this business is owned by one individual. You want 100%
ownership in your side business. Please read all the information supplied by the IRS before
continuing. You’re responsible for reading all the information.
You’re requesting an EIN because you’re starting a new business. You need an EIN to work
with wholesalers. Please tell the IRS about your business, “first name, last name, social
security number” and click “you’re the sole proprietor” and click continue. The IRS wants to
be able to identify you and your business in order to properly collect taxes from you.
The IRS wants you to confirm your “street address, city, state, zip code, and phone number”
Next, you need to tell the IRS “about your sole proprietor” and answer your “name, county,
state, and when you’re starting your business. After answering those questions click
continue. The IRS wants to know what your business does. You’re going to want to click off
retail because you’re exclusively selling goods over the internet.
Finally, you’re going to receive your EIN number online. The IRS will send you the EIN
number in the PDF file which you’ll need to save to your computer to have access to it at
any time. You’re going to need to use it anytime you do business with a wholesaler.
Congrats! You’ve created an EIN and now you’re ready to work with wholesalers and one
step closer to begin making money.
In the Next Chapter
You’ll learn how to call any company and sell their brand named products.
Chapter 7: Finding Wholesale Products to Resell
Introduction
In this section you will learn how to find products to sell. At this point you’ve validated
products that you are passionate about because now you know that they sell well on eBay.
You know which products you want to sell and what price those products sell for on eBay.
Now you need to figure out how to get those products at a cheap enough cost in order to
make a profit.
Goals of this Chapter
You’ll learn how the business sales funnel works and how manufacturers, wholesalers,
dropshippers, and retailers work. You’ll learn how to set up wholesale accounts and what
information wholesalers will need. You’ll learn why there is no risk to dropshipping. You’ll
learn how to spot a fake wholesaler. Finally, you’ll learn how to place an order with the
wholesaler.
Business Funnel
Manufacturers want to sell the most products as they can. That is their goal. They sell to
wholesalers who will buy up a lot of products in order to sell it to retail stores like us.
Wholesalers sell to retail stores and not directly to customers themselves because they’re
also focusing on selling as many products as they can. Wholesalers business model is
based off repeat customers. Every time someone buys a product from us, we buy from
them. We’re the wholesalers repeat customers.
You need to find out if the wholesaler dropships. More and more wholesalers recognize that
they need to dropship products in order to sell more and become accommodating to internet
retail stores.
Drop shipping is a supply chain management technique in which the retailer does not keep
goods in stock, but instead is a broker. They send customer orders and shipment details to
a wholesaler who ships the goods directly to the customer.
The majority of retailers make their profit on the difference between the wholesale and retail
price.
Drop shipping allows you to list products onto your website that wholesalers have in stock
and ready to ship when you make a sale. You list a product for sale on your website that
you found from the wholesalers inventory list. You make the sale and you get paid for a
product that you don’t have in your possession. The wholesaler has it and is ready to ship
once you pay them upfront and send them your customers shipping address. You pay the
wholesaler with your customers money and they ship the product directly to your customer.
In essence you are a broker. There is no risk of carrying an inventory.
Advantages of the Drop Ship Model
The big advantage of the drop shipping model is that you never need to carry inventory or
handle the product. You have no upfront investment in the product. The wholesaler carries
the financial risk of carrying and managing inventory. This also means you never have to
spend time packaging or shipping the product.
Disadvantages of Drop Ship Model
Disadvantage of the drop shipping sourcing model is that a large part of your customer’s
experience is out of your control. You have no control over shipping times. If your drop
shipper is slow to ship a product, or doesn’t keep sufficient inventory in stock it can reflect
negatively on your service.
A great drop shipper however, makes your business look good by keeping sufficient stock
on hand and by shipping quickly. You will discover as you continue with this business that
some drop shippers really are better than others. If your drop shipper does not perform up
to your expectations, find another drop shipper.
Have Multiple Dropshippers
It is a good idea to have multiple drop shippers for the same product. This way, if one drop
shipper runs out of stock, you can go to the other and deliver the item on time and avoid the
possibility of getting a negative feedback. In addition, you should always be looking for
better, less expensive sources for your products.
How to Spot a Fake Wholesaler
A real legitimate wholesaler will not do business with you unless you have an EIN. They will
not show you wholesale prices unless you set up an account with them first. All accounts
are free. There is never a risk in setting up an account with a wholesaler. It’s really easy to
find legit wholesalers. Are you ready to learn how to be able to sell any product you want?
Calling Corporate Headquarters
You want to call the company’s corporate headquarters and ask for the sales department.
Tell the sales department that you own a retail business and want to sell their products. Ask
them for a list of their wholesale distributors in the US. Tell them where your business is
located so they can direct you to the regional sales manager. They want to sell as many
products as possible and they will be happy to give you a list of wholesalers and
dropshippers you can work with.
Calling Wholesalers
Call them enthusiastically with a smile on your face because they will notice a considerable
difference. Slow down your talking and movement by about 50%. Use pauses when
speaking. “Hello, this is Matt Bernstein from Sports Pulse, LLC. I’m interested in retailing
your products on my ecommerce site. Would you tell me how I can get started?” If you get
transferred to the sales department say this “hello this is Matt Bernstein from Sports Pulse,
LLC. I got your number from [this] manufacturer and we’re a retailer interested in carrying
several of your products. Would you tell me how to apply for a new account please?”
Information Wholesaler Will Ask For
Business Name, EIN, Business Address, Business Phone #, Business Status (Are you an
LLC, Storefront/Online Retailer), Time in Business (New business or less than a year)
Trade References and Bank References. They want to know if you want NET30. You’ll tell
them you want to pay for all purchases up front with cash or credit card.
Questions for Wholesalers
Once your account it set up you can call and begin asking questions such as “How soon
after I place an order do you ship it?” and “Do you have overnight shipping available?”
Supplier Policies
Be sure you understand the supplier’s policies in each of these areas:
Pricing
The manufacturer may set a price floor or ceiling in an attempt to control a market. This
means you must sell the product within a specified price range. Otherwise known as MAP
Pricing (Minimum Advertised Price)
Refunds
The refund policy defines whether you will get your money back if your customers return an
item. Your supplier will define if and how they provide refunds. If a customer returns their
order, often you’re responsible for refunding your customer and keeping their items as your
own inventory. The cost of doing business. Only had one return in two years of business.
Returns
The supplier will have specific conditions under which it will accept returns. A normal
wholesaler return policy will have the ability to return items anytime within 30 days.
Guarantees
Most suppliers will stand behind the manufacturer’s product guarantee. You can honor that
guarantee or give your customer an additional guarantee as incentive to purchase from you.
Goods Damaged During Shipping
This policy describes the conditions under which the supplier will accept the return of a
product that is damaged while in transit.
Back Orders
Most suppliers do not have a specific policy if you submit an order for an out-of-stock
product. It will be up to you to determine how you want to handle this situation. In the
interest of good customer relations, you may want to let the customer choose a different
product or get their money back if an item is on backorder.
Net30
Type of trade credit where the payment is due in full 30 days after the item is purchased.

the best to list and sell on eBay. You want to make a profit on every sale and you’ll learn
how to do some more presale research in order to do so.
Chapter 8: Quantifying Wholesaler Product Inventory
Goals of this Chapter
You’ll learn what resources wholesalers give you to list their products for sale. You’ll learn
how to quantify wholesalers inventory and how to apply the 80/20 principle to inventory. In
this section you will learn how to identify the 20% of the products you sell that will make up
80% of your profits. Afterwards we will learn how to properly list an item for sale on eBay.
You’ve now set up accounts with many different wholesalers and finally have access to their
inventory.
What Resources Wholesalers Give You
Wholesalers inventory sheets will supply you with all the resources you need to list your
product:
Product name
Product description
Product image
Retail price
Cost of goods
Quantity in stock & ready to ship
How to Quantify Wholesalers Inventory
You want first start by creating a new file in Microsoft Excel. Create a spreadsheet with sale
price, shipping, cost of goods, eBay fee, PayPal fee, shipping cost = net profit. You want to
guarantee yourself you will make a profit with every sale. You’ll watch an example of this
with one of my dropshippers for Sports Pulse in the video above.
The key is to find items that sell for $250-$3000 because there are so many expenses
dropshipping that you want to insure you stand to make a profit after every transaction.
Another thing to keep in mind is that you should make sure that the wholesaler has at least
a quantity of 12 in stock and ready to ship. You want to ensure you’ll be able to ship out
your customers orders, every time.
Apply the 80/20 Principle to Inventory
Eventually you will find that 20% of your products result in 80% of your profits and you want
to be able to sell as many of those products as possible. It’s also an insurance for you
because you’re not the only company that has access to that product. For an example, if
you decide to list a product that a wholesaler is selling and they only have a quantity of 1 .
Someone else could sell that product and if you don’t find out in time before a customer
buys that product from your store, what are you going to do? You either have lost a sale
and will get negative feedback that will eventually get you kicked off eBay or you need to
find another wholesaler. To avoid that scenario happening to you, always find new
wholesalers to work with. Just because you found 5 or 100, your job to find wholesalers
never ends. You can also avoid that by making sure to not list a product unless the
wholesaler has at least 1 2 of them on hand and ready to ship.
Test Everything
After you identify all of your costs you want about a 7.5-12.5% net profit. Present your
product better than the competition. Measure your past performances. Edit and do more of
what works and drop whatever doesn’t work.
Recap
Make a list of the products you can sell at a profit, complete with the prices you intend to
charge.
Collect the product images and descriptions from your distributor. Doing your product
sourcing properly allows you to earn the highest possible profit margins. It allows you to be
flexible in the products you offer to your potential customers and it allows you to effectively
compete with other seller’s prices. Match the lowest price on eBay for every product or no
more than $15 less or $15 more than the nearest eBay listing.
In the Next Chapter
You’ll finally learn how to properly list an item on eBay in order to maximize the probability
of your item listing over your competitor.
Chapter 9: Listing Retail Product For Sale on eBay
Introduction
You’ve contacted wholesalers and now you have products to sell. You’ve gained valuable
experience in doing so. Congrats to everyone who has done everything up to this point. You
should be very proud of yourselves.
Goals of this Chapter
You’ll learn how to do presale item research before listing your item on eBay. You’ll learn
how to properly list an item on eBay in order to maximize your probability of making a sale.
You’ll learn how your company policies can be the difference between you and your
competitor making the sale.
Presale Research Video
As you evaluate the completed eBay listings be sure you know how to determine:
Total number of results
The number and approximate percentage of listings that ended in a sale
The price of products that have sold in the past 90 days
The most effective keywords
The time of day and day of the week the listing ended
Create the Title
Describe your item clearly and include the keyword phrases that best describe it. Avoid
keywords that have nothing to do with the product you’re selling. Ask yourself, “What would
I type if I was looking for this item?”
Use as many of the characters allowed in the title as you can and use descriptive terms to
consider the following:
Product name
Color (if applicable)
Type
Gender (if applicable)
Brand
Size (if applicable)
Style (if applicable)
SKU (if applicable)
Condition
Description
Your description should be thorough and clearly describe the product and its condition. Be
sure it points out specific or unique features, benefits, and specifications.
Use consistent business-like font sizes and colors. You should use:
Black color
Arial font
Size 12
Bold headings
Keep your sentences and paragraphs short and to the point. Buyers want to get the facts of
your product quickly. They don’t want to read a lot of text. Use bullet points to make them
skimmable and to give emphasis to benefits, features, specifications.
Give it a professional appearance. Carefully check the grammar, punctuation, and spelling
and get help, if necessary, to get it right. Include return, shipping, and payment policies in
the description.
It is very easy to just copy and paste the manufacturer description. On eBay, that’s exactly
what I did and my listings were found on the top of the first page on Google. eBay does the
best job to market your products on all aspects and really earn their commission. My
business wouldn’t be where it is today without eBay, so thank you very much eBay.
Pictures
Very clear pictures that highlight all of the features of the item. You can list up to 12
pictures. List as many pictures as possible that will add value to your customers experience.
You want them to be sized large (at least 1 side with 500px is required by eBay).
Price
You want to match the best price on eBay (or within $10 of the best price) because people
always want to buy the lowest priced listing possible.
Quantity
You’re limited to listing 10 items on eBay to start so keep each listing QTY to 1 per listing.
Shipping Policy
You’re going to be listing products that sell for at least $250 you can offer them free
shipping. In my experience, the dropshippers will give you free shipping anyways so it’s a
no brainer. You don’t pay for shipping and neither do your customers. If your drop shipper
doesn’t ship for free, find another drop shipper that will.
Return Policy
Offer a better return policy than your competition. In retail, your customer always know what
they are buying. You should have a return policy because your customer likes knowing in
the back of their minds that the option to return their order is available. In all my years of
doing business, I’ve had 1 customer return their order. The sale was $600 and I paid $45 for
shipping. Considering my sales were $525,000 in the last two years, having a return policy
was absolutely worth it. You want to accept a 60 day return policy on eBay and say that you
will pay for return shipping. This gives the customer virtually no risk purchasing from you.
You want to be better than your competitors and give your customers the best value so they
will purchase with you and not someone else. Again, you have nothing to be afraid of
because since 2006, I’ve had 1 return. I swear to you, only 1 return. So you have nothing to
worry about. It’s the cost of doing business.
What People Want on eBay
Potential customers want to make a purchase from you if you have the best price. No
matter how nice you are, no matter how accommodating you are to them, no matter what
your shipping and return policies are nothing makes up for having the lowest price. This is
just the retail world we live in today. So you want to match the best price.
Focus on What Won’t Change
The core of your business should be built around things that won’t change. Invest in
business concepts that people are going to want today and thirty years from now. Amazon
focuses on fast & free shipping, great selection, friendly return policies, and affordable
prices. These things will always be in high demand. When you focus on permanent
features, you’re maximizing your long term probability for success.
Quantify Your Business
Focus on items that you can sell more than 12 of
What 20% of products make up 80% of your sales?
What 20% of customers make up 80% of your sales?
In the Next Chapter
You’ll learn how to properly increase your eBay selling limits to be able to increase your
income from home.
Chapter 10: Increasing eBay Selling Limits
Introduction
You’ve learned how to list your products on eBay and now you need to know how to raise
those eBay limits so you can start selling more product. This is a time where you really need
to be patient. Good things happen to those who wait because nothing in life is worth it
unless you have to work for it.
Goals of this Chapter
You’ll learn how to increase your eBay selling limits.
About Selling Limits
You’ll only be able to list 10 items per month or list $1,000 worth of items. Which isn’t a lot
for you to work with.
eBay will also hold your funds into PayPal for up to 21 days after you sell the item. Which
limits your cash flow.
eBay wants you to call every month and speak with their experts to talk more about your
business and more about you. They’ll want to know where you get your products. What
other platforms you’re using. They will mostly go by your past selling performances. Once
they find everything to be good, they will increase your selling limits to 25 items per month
and $5,000 worth of items.
eBay will increase your limits based off your selling habits and tailor the limitations to your
business needs.
Selling Tips
Speak with the eBay representative with a smile on your face because you want to be as
nice as you can in order to get an increase on your eBay selling limits. Answer their
questions to the best of your knowledge. They are here to help you, they want to help you,
and they’re doing their best job to tailor your eBay limits to your business. Be patient
because if your eBay performance is positive, they will increase your limits every 30 days
immediately after a phone call with a representative.
eBay Selling Limits Potential
Since I’d have about 530 positive feedback and 100% positive feedback, asking for
increases every 30 days was easy and I was getting a 75% increase in both categories.
After about 1 year or 12 calls to talk to eBay about increasing my selling limits. eBay raised
my limits to 2,500 items per month and could list $1 ,300,000 worth of items. Now that is a
lot of product and a lot of sales potential.
